Giant Asian Praying Mantis

Praying mantises are a big insect.  They hunt their pray.  They mostly eat flies but they will hunt anything they can catch.

This picture is of me holding a giant praying mantis at the Sault Ste Marie but museum.

Hatching a praying mantis

We hatched our own praying mantises from egg casings that we bought on the internet.

We got 10 egg casings because we have one acre. We hung them around our yard. We spaced them out evenly and hung them on trees and bushes.

Hatching a praying mantis take patience.  It can take up to 8 weeks.

Make sure to cut the packaging so none of them get stuck.

Keeping a praying mantis as a pet

Praying mantises are excellent pets.  You just have to be OK with feeding them flies.  Keep males and females separate because females will eat males.  Females are bigger than males.
